Grieg: Music for String Orchestra $8.47 Like most of his contemporaries, Grieg was motivated by the popularity of works for string orchestra. Apart from his familiar and often-performed Op. 40 Holberg Suite, Grieg also turned to his own music — songs and piano miniatures — on several occasions to make even more arrangements for string orchestra. Grieg’s ideal sound for these works was not of a small, intimate chamber ensemble, but a full, rich, symphonic string sound. The Malmö Symphony Orchestra under conductor Bjarte Engeset produces just such a sound: vibrant, shimmering violins; assertive, powerful violas; and articulate, resonating cellos and basses. Engeset’s own heritage allows him to accentuate the Nationalistic sentiments and scenic vistas Grieg incorporates into his scores. The lyrical, singing qualities of those pieces transcribed from songs are maintained with beautifully crafted, well-connected lines. The Baroque stylings of the Holberg Suite are executed with crisp, clean articulation and a nice contrast from the deeper, more Romantic works on the rest of the album. The disc closes with an equally lush and rousing performance of the Op. 54 Lyric Suite, the only work on the program not for strings alone. Naxos’ sound is clean and clear with just enough reverb to enhance the warmth of the strings. ~ Mike D. Brownell, Rovi |

Landscapes of Africa: Music for Orchestra $19.98 Music written by Africans for Western symphonic ensembles is not common on recordings or Euro-American concert programs, but several African countries have conservatories with music-making that would seem worthy of further investigation. Fred Onovwerosuoke was born Fred Okorefe Kwaku Onovwerosuoke in Ghana in 1960. His family was Nigerian, and his education in African idioms encompassed the music of many different ethnic groups. At the University of Ife in Nigeria he conducted a choral group, and he studied with Ghana’s most famous musical scholar, J.H. Kwabena Nketia. Onovwerosuoke now lives in New Orleans, where many of his manuscripts were nearly destroyed by Hurricane Katrina; admirers recopied them off the soaked pages. The orchestral works heard here are strongly recommended to anyone interested in fusions between the European and African musical languages, for Onovwerosuoke’s thinking is subtle and original. His music strikes the listener as characteristically West African, but at first it’s hard to tell why this should be — the traditions out of which his music grew are all heavily dependent upon percussion instruments, but he uses them only sparingly. (One that does appear is that great interlocutor between African Americans and the wider American culture: the snare drum.) The chief African components of his music are harmonic and melodic, with short, energetic motives in various pentatonic modes deployed across a full symphony orchestra. The orchestra itself is treated with a layered effect that suggests the texture of a group of drums without ever directly imitating it. At the base is an organ that lays out basic rhythmic motives and interacts with the orchestra or a varied group of solo instruments. Onovwerosuoke’s rhythmic language would be worthy of analysis by students of the long process by which a common African-American language, musical and verbal, evolved out of the multiplicity of cultures of the enslaved. The overall effect is kinetic, colorful, and imposing — any symphonic programmer looking for music that will meet urban constituencies halfway should hear this disc. The capable New Horizons Studio Orchestra, hitherto unknown, appears to be a pickup group associated with the St. Louis African Chorus, a group of musicians responsible for issuing this disc and others in an African Art Music Series that, on the evidence here, is eagerly awaited. ~ James Manheim, Rovi |

Penderecki: Music for Chamber Orchestra $15.18 As one of the most significant figures of modernism, Krzysztof Penderecki is immediately associated in the public mind with his groundbreaking compositions, Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, St. Luke Passion, and De Natura Sonoris I and II, which were among the most innovative and challenging works of the 1960s and ’70s. However, Penderecki adopted a neo-Romantic style that has dominated his music from the late ’70s onward, and many of his pieces were composed for strings or small orchestra and last under 10 minutes. This 2008 album by Penderecki and the Varsovia Symphony Orchestra explores some of his music from 1963 to 2005. There is one example of music from his avant-garde period, namely the Intermezzo for 24 strings (1973), which is a study of close-knit contrapuntal repetitions of short figures. Other than that, the music is fairly conventional in harmony and stylistically quite accessible to most listeners. The Pieces (3) in Baroque Style date from 1963 and may have the strongest appeal to casual classical listeners, but they are pastiches of 18th century style and have an artificial quality, unlike the rest of the selections that are recognizably Penderecki’s from their predominantly minor-key tonality and brooding lyricism. Highlights of the album include the Chaconne in Memory of John Paul II, “De Profundis” from Seven Gates of Jerusalem, the Serenade for string orchestra, and the Sinfonietta per archi, which all give a balanced impression of Penderecki’s expressive musical language and eclectic ideas in his post-modern phase. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi Performers: Albrecht Mayer – Horn (English); Artur Haufa – Violin; Artur Paciorkiewicz – Viola; Jerzy Klocek – Cello |

Hindemith: Music for Viola and Orchestra $15.98 Vol. 3 of Lawrence Power’s survey of the complete Hindemith work for viola features a cluster of works written for viola and orchestra in the short time between 1927 and 1930. Though Hindemith did not write a traditional concerto in the classical sense, the Op. 48 Konzertmusik, Kammermusik No. 5, and Der Schwanendreher each put the viola’s abilities at the forefront of the orchestra. His personal knowledge of the instrument’s technical, lyrical, and emotive abilities become quickly apparent as the viola is made to scurry around as nimbly as a violin in Konzertmusik, as emotionally rich as a cello in Trauermusik, or as colorful and evocative as a piano in Der Schwanendreher. All of these many moods are captured effortlessly by Power. His playing balances the clarity needed to execute agile passagework with the richness and depth needed for more lyrical sections. What’s more, Power never gives the appearance of trying to make the viola sound like a violin; instead, he celebrates the viola’s idiosyncrasies and transforms them into a rich, satisfying tapestry of sound. Joined by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under David Atherton, Vol. 3 of Power’s hefty undertaking is just as worthwhile and engaging as the previous two and is certainly worth checking out. ~ Mike D. Brownell, Rovi |

Bacewicz: Music for String Orchestra $15.98 To say the music of Grazyna Bacewicz is utterly unknown outside her native Poland would be a bit of an exaggeration, but only a bit. Though she ranks as one of the finest Polish composers of the generation after Szymanowski and before Lutoslawski, Bacewicz’s music is rarely programmed and even more rarely recorded. This 2009 Hyperion disc with Ronald Corp leading the New London Orchestra is especially welcome since it contains four of her works, two of them premiere recordings. Three of the pieces here, including the premieres, are scored for string orchestra — the 1935 Sinfonietta, the 1946 Symphony, and the 1948 Concerto — while the fourth describes its scoring with its title: Music for strings, trumpets, and percussion (1958). Though their essentially tonal harmonic language grows more austere over time, all four works are fundamentally abstract music filled with the overwhelming need to communicate. Bacewicz’s themes are always urgently expressive, and her harmonies are always purposefully moving somewhere. The program starts with her melodically appealing concerto, followed by her vivacious sinfonietta and serious symphony, and concludes with her moody and mysterious Music for strings, trumpets, and percussion, giving a fair picture of Bacewicz’s development as a composer. The performances by Corp and his London musicians are amazingly secure and thoroughly enjoyable, and Hyperion’s digital sound is clear and cool, but evocative. Anyone interested in mid-20th century modernism should by all means try this disc. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |

Vieuxtemps: Music for Violin & Orchestra $7.18 The violin concertos of Belgian-born composer/virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps have been recorded by various players, including the young Russian-American virtuoso Misha Keylin heard here. But these shorter pieces, which would have been the stock-in-trade of Vieuxtemps’ active touring life (during one American tour he made 121 appearances in six months, without benefit of planes, automobiles, or in many cases trains), are a good deal rarer. They don’t have the main virtue of the concertos, which is that there’s a certain amount of structural interest to go with the Paganini-like fireworks, but they’re a great deal of fun. Especially attractive for U.S. listeners, and perhaps even those beyond, is the Greeting to America, Op. 56, published posthumously but clearly written for one of Vieuxtemps’ three U.S. tours; the notes (in English only) don’t say which one. The piece lays out segments based on The Star-Spangled Banner and Yankee Doodle, the latter of which might seem an unlikely candidate for virtuoso violin treatment. But that’s the charm of the work. Both the familiar tunes are introduced almost obliquely, with orchestral accompaniment to The Star-Spangled Banner avoiding the melody’s straightforward implied harmonies; the violin single-handedly adds energy as each section proceeds, and the grand finale combines the two tunes, with the violin frenetically expanding on previous material. This 13-minute piece would make a delightful choice for patriotic celebrations and might well attract new subscribers for the presenting orchestra. The other three works are similarly structured, with an orchestral introduction designed to set up a big entrance for the soloist, and Keylin, who has a laserlike top register in the Heifetz mode, enthusiastically responds. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Mogrelia stays with him, and the sound is better than average for Naxos’ Eastern European releases. A fine revival of music that has been almost forgotten. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Misha Keylin – Violin |
